At the foot of Mount Limbara, the lovely and distinctive town of Tempio Pausania has long been considered Galluras cultural capital. Its historical center, made up of a seemingly endless succession of granite buildings adorned by wrought iron balconies overlooking stone-paved alleys and streets, offers many beautiful views. Tempio is a lively and welcoming town, noted for its winter Carnival, one of Sardinias biggest and most popular: the dancing, street parades and general merriment last for six days, and thousands of people participate. The International Folklore Festival takes place each July, and has been a yearly tradition for over 30 years. On August 14th and 15th, the Mountain Feast draws local crowds to Mount Limbara. The Feast of Saint Isidore, protector of farmers, is celebrated on the first Sunday of September: on this occasion, an image of the saint is carried in procession through the streets of downtown on ox-drawn wagons, with the accompaniment of the town band, of horsemen and folk groups from all over Sardinia, and of musicians playing primitive reed-pipe instruments called launeddas. The Feast of Mary the Child, on the first Sunday of September, comprises a very evocative torchlight procession throughout town and should not be missed. Pausania Inn is ideally located both to visit nearby Mount Limbara and to access the coast and beautiful white-sand beaches of Northern Sardinia, with a pleasant drive through the so-called Moon Valley, a spectacular landscape studded with wind-molded granite sculptures.
